Walt's - An American Restaurant Review Disneyland Paris
Walt's - An American Restaurant is a table service restaurant on Main Street USA at Disneyland Paris.
This restaurant is one of the best places I have eaten at the parks. It has beautiful décor, its full of Disney history and, most importantly, the food is delicious.
I ate here for the very first time over Christmas, and this is my review of the experience.
Theming at Walt's
If you love Disney history like me, Walt's is a must visit on your trip to Disneyland Paris. The restaurant is themed to the life of Walt Disney and the history of Disneyland Paris.
When you first walk into the lobby on the ground floor, you will see a number of portraits of Walt and his family laid out on a table. There is also a bust of Walt Disney at the foot of the staircase leading to the dining rooms.
And if you want to know just how much detail the Imagineers go into when designing these parks, it is no coincidence that Walt's Restaurant is right next door to Lilly's Boutique, a shop named after and dedicated to Walt's wife, Lilian.
On your way up the stairs, you will see several pictures of Walt throughout his life, including a picture with Mickey Mouse and of him walking through the original Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland in Anaheim, California.
Upstairs, the theme switches to the history of Disneyland Paris. Each of the dining rooms is themed to one of the lands in Disneyland Park: Main Street USA, Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland and Discoveryland.
Obviously, you can't pick which room you will be sitting in for your meal, but I got lucky. If I were to choose one room to see, it would be the Frontierland room because it is my favourite land at Disneyland Paris. So, I was really happy to find that I had been given a table in the Frontierland room.
The theming is done really well in the dining rooms. In the Frontierland room, the walls are decorated with concept art drawn by the Imagineers when designing the attractions for that land. There was concept art for Big Thunder Mountain, Phantom Manor and the Thunder Mesa Riverboat.
I also loved the bookshelves built into the walls in the Frontierland building, giving it the look of an old library.
The one thing I would say is that the rooms are quite cramped and the tables are pretty close together. Luckily, we had a table in the corner, so we had a bit more space.
Also, being in corner meant that I had a great view of Main Street from above, and of the Dream... And Shine Brighter Parade as I was enjoying my meal.
The theming at Walt's is beautiful. If you are a Disney history fan, you will love looking at the concept art for the various lands.
The Food
Walt's has a 3-course menu, which costs €55 adults. Unlike some table service restaurants, this does not include a drink, so there is no denying it is an expensive place to eat.
The price is set (as far as I can tell, you can't just have a main course and pay less, for example) and there are three or four starters, five or six main courses and a few desserts to choose from.
For my meal, I chose:
- Starter: Chicken Pot Pie
- Main Course: Chilli Con Carne
- Dessert: Lemon Meringue Pie
The Chicken Pot Pie is a bit of a strange choice for a starter, but I am not a big soup or salad person, so it was great for me. The pie was just the right size for a starter and came served with a vegetable slaw on the side.
The filling, which had pieces of chicken and various vegetables, was creamy and had a slight tang, which I enjoyed. The crust was thin and buttery, and I loved the presentation with the Mickey-shaped pastry top.
The Chilli was my favourite of the three dishes. It was a deconstructed chilli, with slices of beef, rice, sour cream, cheese and red onions all served separately on the plate and the actual chilli served in a side pot.
I think this is a great idea. Not only does it elevate the presentation, but it also means that, if you don't like one of the ingredients, it will not affect your enjoyment of the dish.
The chilli itself was pretty tasty, although it was very similar in flavour to the chilli you can get at the Last Chance Café, a quick service restaurant in Frontierland. Although, I do think the sour cream and onions added some extra flavour and texture to the dish.
I also loved the Lemon Meringue Pie. The crust was thin, crispy and buttery and the lemon filling was both sweet and slightly tart. The little meringues on top were soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. The Mickey theme continued with this dish too, because one of the meringues was shaped like Mickey Mouse.
The food was the thing that surprised me the most about Walt's. Sometimes, when you go to a themed restaurant, the food doesn't live up to the experience as a whole. But the food at Walt's was some of the best I have had at Disneyland Paris.
What I really like is that the dishes feel like they belong in an expensive table service restaurant, but the ingreidents are very accessible i.e. most people would enjoy them. I think even fussy eaters would be able to find something they enjoy on the menu here.
I also thought the portions sizes were just right. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to manage all three courses, but I left feeling full without feeling too overly full to continue my day in the park.
I honestly could not recommend the food at Walt's enough. You will not be disappointed if you eat here.
Overall Review
If you can afford it in your holiday budget, I would highly recommend dining at Walt's.
The décor is beautiful and certainly a must-see if you have a Disney history fan in your group. And the food lives up to expectations too. The menu has a fantastic selection of dishes and I think anyone would enjoy the food on offer. The service was fast too and our waitress was very friendly and did a great job looking after us.
Of course, the one negative to Walt's is the price. It is one of the most expensive restaurant to eat at in Disneyland Paris.
Having said that, I think that it is worth the price at least once. I will certainly be back in the future.
